Biography of John N. Mangieri, Ph.D.

Dr. John N. Mangieri conducts research and teaches programs that focus on personnel and leadership development as well as upon the attainment of high levels of organizational performance. Since 1994, he has worked with numerous professionals from government, private-sector, and non-profit organizations to improve: their success as leaders, the skill levels of personnel within these organizations, and the performance of the organization. He is an adjunct faculty member at the Federal Executive Institute and the Center for Organizational Performance as well as an instructor for the Project Management Institute, where he provides programs for corporate and business leaders. Programs which he has taught not only have met their instructional objectives but also they have consistently received very positive evaluations from participants.

John has written 21 books and 94 professional articles. A former leadership development book was twice a Barnes & Noble “Best Buy” as well as a B.Dalton “Book of the Month” selection. The leadership book which he most recently co-authored (Power Thinking: How the Way You Think Can Change the Way You Lead) was the top selling book in the country during the month of February, 2004. This book is popular internationally as well having been translated into Norwegian, Korean, Chinese and Russian. He is also the co-author of the Yale Assessment of Thinking (Jossey-Bass, Second Edition) which, since its publication has been administered to over 90,000 individuals as part of personnel and leadership development programs.

John has conducted programs for professionals from corporations such private-sector as American Express, IBM, Merrill Lynch, Boeing, Honeywell, Bayer Corporation, United States Steel, Volkswagen, and BB&T. He has additionally worked for numerous government departments and agencies including the Departments of Commerce, Defense, Homeland Security, Interior, and Treasury. John was also invited to serve as an instructor for the President’s Council for Integrity in Government program. He has additionally taught programs and served as a consultant to many state and local government organizations, healthcare providers, and school districts in the United States and has led leadership development programs for professionals in 23 foreign countries.

In the programs that he teaches and for the organizations with which he consults, John brings both academic credentials and a depth of leadership experience. He received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh, is a Fulbright Scholar, and has also pursued post-doctoral study in leadership and management at Harvard University and Carnegie-Mellon University. Experience-wise as a leader, within the non-profit sector, John has held a variety of administrative positions including university president, and in the private sector, he has served as a CEO of a company whose mission is to improve the effectiveness and performance of individuals and organizations. Among the honors that he has received for his performance as a leader while in these positions is the prestigious Exemplary Models of Leadership Award from the American Association of University Administrators. He additionally was honored twice by the University of Pittsburgh for his professional accomplishments.
