Catharyn A. Baird, J.D., is the CEO and Founder of EthicsGame® and Professor Emerita of Business at Regis University, Denver, Colorado. She began researching personal and professional ethics when she was a practicing attorney, representing children and parents who found themselves enmeshed in the juvenile justice system. As she worked with families, she became intrigued by the question of why some children seemed to know the “right thing to do” while others did not.
Her interest in why people struggle with ethics was further piqued while teaching undergraduate students and business professionals. She discovered that while people wanted to live ethical lives, they often lacked the tools to become ethically mature. Thus, they were ill equipped to do the right thing within their complex business environments.
In order to help people learn to make better decisions, she developed a unique approach to resolving ethical dilemmas which sparked the development of EthicsGame learning solutions presented for sale by Leadership Courseware.
As a frequent speaker on ethics and economic justice, Dr. Baird shares her passion for helping people move from “being right to being responsible” with business professionals, as well as parents who strive to teach their children to be ethical, and citizens who wish to build a strong society. Tired of strident polemics, Baird joins with others who advocate dialogue to nourish shared respect and responsibility, the foundation stones of an ethical community.
Over the years Baird has also conducted workshops in a variety of environments. These range from working with corporations and governmental agencies to establish an ethical culture to community groups anxious to be more effective parents and citizens. These conversations have given her the opportunity to listen to the hopes and dreams of a wide swath of people. She finds that whether talking around the kitchen or the board room table, people desire a community where their children can thrive and they can contribute to our shared lives.
Born in Tacoma, Washington, Baird received her BA in English and MA in Humanities from Pacific Lutheran University. She attended the University of Puget Sound (now Seattle University) School of Law.
After graduating from law school, Baird practiced law for ten years before joining the faculty at Regis University. From 1987-1995, she also served as in-house counsel for the Colorado Secretary of State, specializing in election law. Over the course of her tenure at Regis University, she has held a variety of administrative positions. In 2000 she was named Regis University Faculty Member of the Year. In addition, she has a national reputation as a keynote speaker and workshop facilitator on issues of ethics, justice, and spirituality in the workplace.
