The Leadership Courseware Story

In the late 1980s, Jeff Howell and Bruce Batky were both supporting the UNIX operating system for Hewlett-Packard. Independently they both transferred to the Denver, Colorado office, where they met and shared their ideas and passions of starting a company. In 1991, they formed a partnership and, taking a cue from Hewlett-Packard, named the company Batky-Howell.

Batky-Howell’s initial focus was UNIX consulting but Jeff and Bruce soon discovered the true need was for UNIX training. The transition from consulting to training began and they developed their first course, Fundamentals of UNIX. This course was so successful that it was quickly followed by Advanced UNIX Tools, Shell Programming, and C Programming. They continued to add courses and currently have more than 70 classes in topics from Crystal Reports to .NET.

Batky-Howell’s success came from their extreme focus on customer needs and the practice of creating an encompassing, flexible training experience that went beyond the cookie-cutter environment offered elsewhere. Their classes focused on what could be put to immediate use when students got back to work. Students were challenged to learn by doing with no coverage of fluff material. They called it 100% hands-on training because students worked on examples as they were discussed and worked on formal labs that reinforced what was covered during the lecture.

To achieve the quality they sought for their students, it was necessary for them to create course materials that supported their teaching style. Students often asked if it were possible for them to purchase the content. Those inquiries fueled Jeff and Bruce’s desire to share their expertise with others and led to the creation of ITCourseware. Launched in 1998, ITCourseware is a web-based store dedicated to the sale of IT-related courseware for use by technical training professionals everywhere. At inception, ITCourseware had approximately 30 titles, all of which were created by the Batky-Howell development team. Working with courseware designers and technical experts around the world, the list of titles expanded over the next 10 years to over 400.

Based on the highly successful quality and service model defined for ITCourseware, our family of stores and products expanded once more with the creation of the Leadership Courseware store, which offers a comprehensive curriculum focused on the learning needs of business.
